DIOCESE OF MOTHERWELL YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY TEAM: A.L.M.A. LOURDES PILGRIMAGE: 20TH July –2nd August 2010. The ALMA pilgrimage assists the sick pilgrims of the diocesan Pilgrimage in their week in Lourdes. On route the ALMA pilgrimage will visit the tomb of St. Bernadette in Nevers and on the way hom spend a day at disneyland in Paris. Applications are open to all those 17+ (who have completed S6) - 26 YEARS OLD. The cost for the 14 day pilgrimage will be £693 (plus travel insurance). Contact Father Hughes if interested.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE MISSIONS: is today Sunday 18th October 2009. There will be a second collection for the Propagation of the Faith. World Mission Sunday encourages prayer and financial support for the mission outreach of the Catholic Church in a world where millions are thirsting to hear of God’s love for them and longing for the light of Christ in their lives. Money collected on World Mission Sunday goes towards helping: 83,000 priests, 455,000 religious and 1,700,000 catechists. Through them APF supports 194,855 schools, 5,246 hospitals, 17,530 dispensaries, 577 leprosy centres, and 80,560 social and charitable institutions.

Gospel: Mark 8: 27-35. The disciples discover that Jesus is the Messiah; he reveals that as disciples they must be ready to follow him in carrying the cross.

First Reading: Isaiah 35: 4-7. The prophet Isaiah offers words of hope and encouragement to those who are poor and downtrodden, assuring them that God is always faithful and that they will not be abandoned.

Second Reading: James 2: 1-5. St. James says that the one who walks in Christ’s footsteps will be the one who welcomes everyone in the name without discrimination.

Gospel: Mark 7: 31-37. The story of Jesus healing the man who is deaf and has a speech impediment reminds us of the power of his love for all humanity. His desire to heal is there for us too.

First Reading: Joshua 24: 1-2. 15-18. Joshua asks the newly liberated Israelites whom they would worship—the gods of their neighbours, or the god who brought them out of Egypt. Their choice would bing them to the true God for ever.
Second Reading: Ephesians 5: 21-32. In the letter, married couples are urged to respect and serve each other, self-sacrificially, with love. Such is the relationship between Christ and his Church.
Gospel: John 6: 60-69. Jesus responds to the difficulties of his followers over the teaching on the Eucharist. He challenges them to follow him, or leave. The apostles know that with his is life eternal.

MAKE A SPLASH AT STRATHCLYDE COUNTRY PARK: Join in the first Great Scottish Swim. This one-mile, open water challenge will be held on 29th August at Strathclyde Park and is one of a series of mass participation swim events being held across the UK to encourage people to get fit and raise some money for charity. The event is open to swimmers at any level.

First Reading: Exodus 24: 3-8. Moses put God’s commandments into writing and offers sacrifices. With the blood of the sacrifices he seals the covenant on behalf of the people.
Second Reading : Hebrews 9: 11-15. Christ is the high priest of the new covenant, sacrificing not animals but his own body, and sealing the covenant with his blood.

CORPUS CHRISTI: the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is next Sunday 14th June 2009.

There is a new painting at the back of the Church facing our Lady’s altar. The painting is called the Betrayal of Christ by the Italian Artist Carravaggio. Clearly it is a copy of the picture ! - from the National Gallery in Dublin!! It portrays Our Lord’s betrayal and the artist uses dark and light in the picture to highlight the person of Jesus and the dramatic events prior to the Passion. It fits well in the same line of view as the Stations of the Cross. I hope you like it.

First Reading: Acts 3: 13-15. 17-19. Peter gives witness to the people, telling them that they have killed the prince of life but that they can repent and then their sins will be wiped out.

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY, on Sunday 3rd May 2009 is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pope Paul VI instituted the World Day of Prayer for Vocations (the 4th Sunday of Easter) on the 11th April 1964 by saying;

“O Jesus, divine Shepherd of the spirit, you have called the Apostles in order to make them fishermen of men, you still attract to you burning spirits and generous young people, in order to render them your followers and ministers to us” (Pope Paul VI launching the 1st Word Day of Prayer for Vocations). In the 43 years since, successive pontiffs have called on the Church to focus and pray for vocations.

Gospel for the Procession: Mark 11: 1-10. Jesus’ preparations to enter Jerusalem signify that he is the promised Messiah. The manner of his entrance points to the coming of the kingdom of God.
First Reading: Isaiah: 50: 4-7. In the midst of suffering, the disciple listens to God’s word and finds salvation.
Second Reading : Philippians 2: 6-11. This is a hymn that proclaims both Christ’s divinity and the humanity. He became truly human and subjected himself to death on a cross, but God restored him to his pre-existent glory.
Gospel: Mark 14: 1-15:47. In the narrative of the passion the life and ministry of Jesus move into their final hour. From the darkness of lonely suffering and death comes the hope of resurrection.

I appreciate that this could well be a difficult time for some families, given the economic uncertainty at this time, with ever rising unemployment tables. But the Lord entered the world with very little and he left it without even the clothes on his back. I pray that the child of Our Blessed Lady will be very close to all who need him most this Christmastide and I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

TODAY’S THEME

First Reading: Isaiah 63: 16-17; 64: 1. 3-8. The people of Israel have returned from exile in Babylon, but Jerusalem lies in ruins; their hopes for a better future have been crushed and they feel weighed down by guilt. Isaiah implores God to come again as Redeemer in a manifestation even greater than on Mount Sinai.
Second Reading : 1 Corinthians 1: 3-9. Ancient Corinth had risen from the ashes of destruction and had been rebuilt into an important centre of commerce, but it was also a place or corruption on a vast scale. Paul extols the Christian community for their witness and adherence to God whose faithfulness will sustain them to the end.
Gospel: Mark 13: 33-37. By means of a parable Jesus impresses upon his followers the need to be watchful and ready to meet God on the last day.

PRISONERS WEEK: is from 16th—23rd November 2008. The theme this year is “Who’s offence is it anyway” and it invites people to be aware and reflect on prisoners, imprisonment, and the community and to take part in an online debate at http://www.prisonersweekscotland.co.uk. HOPE is an organisation that offers support to prisoners, offenders and their families. It is looking for volunteers to become Prison Visitors to those in prison who are isolated, and volunteers to help in its work of supporting vulnerable families, who have many needs as a consequence of the offending or imprisonment of a family member. HOPE would also be happy to offer support ot any individual or family affected in this way. Prisoners’ Week present an opportunity to reflect and a challenge to act. First Reading: 1 Kings 19:9. 11-13. The terrifying forces of natures do not deter Elijah from waiting patiently for God. When he hears the sound of a gentle breeze he knows that God is near.

Second Reading Romans : 9: 1-5. Christ is physically descended from the people of Israel. He is the fulfilment of the privileges granted to them by God throughout their history.

Gospel: Matthew: 14: 22-33. Peter and the disciples, in a boat far out at sea and fighting against the storm, represent the Church.. By walking across the water and saving them, Jesus reveals that he is the Lord of creation and that he is never apart from us, even if we cannot see him with our physical eyes.

WORLD YOUTH DAY IN LOURDES:
For those young people who are not able to travel to Australia for the World Youth Day in Sydney, you are welcome to come to Lourdes from 15-20 July.

1. When? At the same time as the WYD in Sydney, 15-20 July 2008. From the 10-22 for the volunteers and from 14-20 for musicians.
2. Why? Not everyone can travel to Sydney and therefore we are going to have live link-ups with the events in Australia, it is also the 150th anniversary of the apparitions here in Lourdes.

WORLD HEALTH DAY: on 7th April 2008, marks the founding of the World Health Organization and is an opportunity to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year. In 2008, World Health Day focuses on the need to protect health from the adverse effects of climate change. The theme “protecting health from climate change” puts health at the centre of the global dialogue about climate change. WHO selected this theme in recognition that climate change is posing ever growing threats to global public health security.
Through increased collaboration, the global community will be better prepared to cope with climate-related health challenges worldwide.

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES: Around 70,000 Catholic pilgrims descended on Lourdes on Monday 11th February 2008 for a mass commemorating the 150th anniversary of a series of visions of the Virgin Mary by a young French shepherdess. More than 25 bishops and 800 priests were in attendance at the service celebrated by the Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes, Jacques Perrier and the Archbishop of Marseille Bernard Panafieu. The mass took place in a field opposite the Massabielle rine where the mother of Jesus Christ is said to have first
appeared in a vision to Bernadette Soubirous on 11th February, 1858. Accompanied by a 30-member choir, readings for the mass were given in several languages, including English,
Spanish, German.

GAUDETE SUNDAY

The Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, the 'pink c

andle' Sunday, the Sunday we light the pink candle on the Advent wreath. Gaudete is the imperative plural form of the Latin verb gaudere (to rejoice). It is a command ordering us to rejoice! In these days of penance and preparation leading up to the feast of our Saviour's birth, it reminds us of the joy that is to come, and serves, amid this season of penance, as a kind of 'break' when we recall the hope we have because of the coming of Jesus.

TODAY’S THEME

First Reading: Isaiah 60: 1-6
Isaiah prophesies that the Messiah will be the light and salvation of all the world.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3: 2-3. 5-6
In the incarnation of Christ, God’s plan of salvation is revealed. The Gentiles now share in God’s promises.

Gospel: Matthew 2: 1-12
The Magi represent the Gentiles who are now called to become part of God’s people. They come to worship the infant Christ.

FEAST DAYS: Monday 8th January, is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and is the end of the Christmas Season. Tuesday of this week is the beginning of ordinary time. Saturday 13th January, is the Feast of St. Kentigern.

ENROLMENT FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION: is on Sunday 14 January 2007 at the 10.30 a.m. Mass.

REGISTRATION OF INFANT BEFINNERS FOR AUGUST 2007:Children who attain the age of 5 years between 1 March 2007 and 28 February 2008 should register at Alexandra Primary School at the following times: Tuesday 16th January between 9.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Wednesday 17th January between 9.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.

Each child’s: Birth Certificate, Baptismal Certificate, Proof of Address must be produced.

Second Reading: Hebrews: 10: 5-10
The author looks back to the Psalms and finds there an explanation that Jesus came into the world to offer himself as a sacrifice for our sins.
Gospel: Luke 1: 30-44
The mother of our Lord sets out on a long journey to share the news of her pregnancy with her relative Elizabeth, who herself is expecting a baby.

But the greatest gift that any of us can give to God at Christmas is to be ever faithful to God by living as he wants us to do, as the faithful and devoted followers of his son.

First Reading: Baruch 6L 1-9
Baruch offers a marvellous hope-filled vision to the people who have lost everything: home, country and even apparently, their God. But God has remembered them.

Second Reading: Philippians 1: 3-6, 8-11
Paul remembers the people of Philippi in his prayers, praying that they will continue to grow in holiness and love.

Gospel: Luke 3: 1-6
Luke’s solemn introduction to the ministry of John the Baptist indicates that this is a momentous time for all people; salvation is on its way for all the nations of the earth.

ADVENT: Advent is a time of joyful anticipation. It is time, the prophet aruch says, to take off your robe of mourning and misery, for God is leading his people with his mercy and justice for company. God’s people are wrapped in the cloak of justice from God, and they will be named by God forever the peace of justice.

This passage, written in the second century BC, is the first clear promise in the Old Testament of resurrection from the dead and eternal life.

Jesus has offered the “one single sacrifice” that has achieved the salvation of the whole human race.

Gospel: Mark 13: 24-32

Jesus will return in glory, though it is useless to speculate on the day or hour of his coming.

The parish priest of Holy Trinity and all Saints is Father Colin Hughes B.Ed.

Fr. Hughes was ordained priest in 1986 and has worked in St. Francis Xav. Carfin, Our Lady of Lourdes East Kilbride, St. Patrick's Coatbridge, St. Bridgid's Newmains, the Cathedral Motherwell and St. Francis Xav. Carfin (parish priest) before joining Holy Trinity and All Saints in 1998.

WELCOME TO THE web site of the parish of Holy Trinity and All Saints, Coatdyke. Our community is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Motherwell in the West of Scotland. Our parish opened in 1902 in a site in Rochsolloch Road, Coatdyke. In the late 1970's the parish purchased the present church from the Church of Scotland as the original church was small and in need of massive repairs. Ministering to a community of 1000, the parish also provides a chaplaincy service to Alexandra Primary School and Saint Patrick's High School.
